FAQ's -How VIKINGS COMPETITIVE VOLLEYBALL WORKS

What does the tryout fee include?

The non-refundable fee includes insurance, physical testing (4 tests), skill assessment (3 skills), on-court practice (1-2 hours), off-court info sessions, athlete questionnaire & a scrimmage (1-2 hours).
There are no refunds of the tryout fee for any reason.

How many sessions do I have to attend?

Each athlete must attend a minimum of 2 tryout sessions. The first will be for the registration, physical testing and skill assessment. The second will include a practice, info session, questionnaire and game situation assessment. Typically 3 or more sessions may occur, and it is highly recommended that athletes attend every session to ensure proper assessment.

What if I miss a tryout?

If for any valid reason, an athlete misses any tryout session, they must contact the Head Coach for that age division.  If the athlete misses a second or subsequent session, please contact the head coach of that specific team to determine if there could be another time available for assessment; the Head Coach has final say in these matters, they are not obligated in any way to provide additional assessment time.

If there is a conflict between ours and another Club’s tryout, we recommend that you inform us in advance and we will help you work out any such conflicts to create a solution that maximizes the options for the athlete.

How much does it cost to be on a Competitive team?

As a non-profit organization, The VIKINGS club team fees are cost-recovery only. Budgets set by the Club Financial Officer cover all fixed operating costs, such as: OVA registration and tournament entry fees, team uniforms and additional VIKINGS clothing, coaching, and practice requirements (gyms, balls, equipment), and minimal operational costs. Additional competitions, travel and accommodation are "pay as you go" based on an agreed upon season plan. SEE LAST POST ON THIS PAGE

How long is a competitive tournament season?

The competitive tournament season starts in Nov-Dec and ends in Apr-May. Once teams are formed, teams start to practice. Most competitive teams play up to 4 OVA tournaments with the possibility of more depending upon the seasonal plan.  The tourneys are 1 day events and nearly always take place on  Saturdays. Most locations will require an overnight stay in a hotel the night before competition.  Almost all of our teams will attend Provincials  (generally in Waterloo Ont. at RIM Park) and/or Nationals (2-3 day events).  Cornwall was very fortunate last season as we were chosen to host several OVA tournaments during the 2016-2017 season. Parents save travel time and money if this is the case and pulling together as a team to set up makes this an enjoyable experience for all.

How does the team selection process work?

As in previous years, the selection process will include an assessment of various sport related elements such as physical literacy and physical competency, on-court skills, coach-ability and physical tests.  As a late-development sport, the best volleyball players are the best athletes first, who then become excellent volleyball players.  A commitment to working hard to improve every time is priceless.  To eliminate bias no candidate is permitted to wear any club attire. All athletes are evaluated by a panel of coaches who then jointly select the team with the final decision made by the Head coach.

Tryouts are held in September, at the beginning of the season, and the season goes from October to May of the following year - a total of 8 months. Athletes that make the teams are asked to commit to 2 practices a week along with the expectation that the athletes commit to additional physical conditioning and training while not on the court.

How can I help?

> Special events (tryouts, university scrimmages, tournaments)

***FUNDRAISING***

If my child makes the team, then what?

When each coach has finalized their team, all of the players will be handed a letter that informs them if they do or do not have a position for the season.  The athletes are not permitted to open their letters until they have left the building.
Should your child be offered a position you will be informed of a mandatory parent and player meeting. At this meeting the club executive will discuss and distribute paperwork, partial fees will be processed, jersey numbers will be allotted and uniform sizing will take place.
The following will also be discussed:
-the proposed dates for our OVA tourneys (3 or 4 dates),  already posted on the OVA site
-additional scrimmage dates will be proposed

-team expectations
-parental obligations, a detailed explanation of the role of a volleyball parent :)
-our club policy regarding athlete protocol and behaviour, car-pooling, team meals etc.

Why do we only know the tournament dates and not the tournament locations?

The OVA runs a tiered system with possible upward and downward movement throughout the season.  There are many girls teams in the OVA so we can expect that as we are a new club, with new teams, we can expect to be in the lower tiers. We are optimistic and we will always aim to play our best game so you never know how high we may climb, but generally speaking, we can expect that our teams will be playing in Ottawa, Kingston and this Eastern part of our province. We are also hoping to host a few OVA tourneys once again this season thereby eliminating the need to travel. Provincials are the exception as they are held in Waterloo.

How much is this going to cost?

We realize that life is expensive, so we are constantly working to keep our fees at a reasonable level.  Our club asks for a partial fee at signing and then the remaining balance, shortly thereafter. If we are very successful with our fundraising campaigns and donations we hope to offset the fees. We also encourage parents/athletes to privately speak with us if you might require additional help with club fees. The UCDSB Champions for Kids foundation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart and various other agencies may have funds that are available to our athletes.
Before any possible deductions we expect this season to cost between $975-1200. Unlike many other sports, all of your costs are included and the only additional financial output would be for hotel accommodation if necessary.
