Check back here again soon if you are interested in becoming a certified OVA official!
Are you interested in Refereeing Volleyball? The Seaway Valley Volleyball Referees Association is looking for candidates for our upcoming season. A Successful candidate would be someone who knows and loves the game. You must have the ability to be able to make decisions quickly, be assertive but not aggressive, be experienced in some facet of the game and you must be patient as many of the games we referee locally involve high school students who are just learning the game. When certified you are also eligible to referee at some Ontario Volleyball Association tourneys in the surrounding area.
Becoming certified at the introductory "LOCAL" level requires attending a Referee Certification clinic. Cornwall will host a clinic if we have enough (2-3) people ready to participate, however if we are not able to host a clinic, Ottawa typically hosts a fall and a spring clinic. There is a cost to each clinic (approximately $50) and upon passing you must also register and pay dues (approximately $120.00) as a certified official within the Ontario Volleyball Association. The OVA requires that these dues be paid annually, however one or two days of refereeing will help to offset this fee. Typically the clinics have an information session of several hours when you would discuss the rule book in detail. A second evening details scenarios, protocol, and further revision of the rule book and concludes with a test. You must score well on the test in order to move on to the practical portion of the certification. Generally a tournament is hosted and the referees are able to put their knowledge forward by refereeing. Throughout the day you are critiqued and given valuable feedback with the expectation that you can adapt and progress as you would throughout a season.
After certification, we expect that the candidate be mentored by more experienced officials and as such, be willing and able to make the required improvements to better their skills. The games that are assigned in SD&G involve travelling to all of the high schools in our area. The games generally begin at around 11am (referees must be at the gym a minimum of 30 mins in advance of the scheduled start time) and conclude around 5pm. The league play consists of approximately two game sites per week and playoffs. In the past we have refereed 3 matches (3 sets each) in a row. A less experienced referee would typically be assigned more junior, often slower paced games until they gain the skills needed to advance to the senior games. The fees paid to referees change annually, but you can expect a competitive sum and mileage compensation is also offered for travel. Cheques are issued at the end of each season (high school boys play in the Fall and high school Girls play late fall/winter early Spring) when the schools pay their invoices.
The game of Volleyball is a game of angles and in the gym we all tend to see the game a little differently. Being an official is a privileged title, but it also brings pressure when athletes and coaches are competing for the win. Handling yourself with confidence and composure will ensure that you are respected and it will also ensure that everyone in the gym from the line judges, score table helpers, athletes and coaches, to yourself, all have an enjoyable game.
